Farm policies for the feeding of livestock.

چکیده

The animal feeds industry has known for some 25 years how to formulate a compound diet which conforms to a set of minimum or maximum nutrient constraints, and to ensure that the ingredients are chosen in such a way as to minimize the cost per ton of the resulting compound. The computer technique of lincar programming has been in use for over 10 years by the larger firms as a routine step in diet formulation, and it is accepted practice in England that minimum or maximum percentages of the more important nutrients are printed on the bag. However, as Dent & Casey (1967) remind us, animals do not eat percentages, but measurable weights of nutrients per day; and the total weight of the feed in which these nutrients are carried may be of secondary importance. Limits on voluntary intake will certainly impose extra constraints on the formulation of a ration but these will be by no means as rigid as the specification of fixed nutrient percentages. Formulation of a ration in terms of daily requirement for calories, amino acids, vitamins and minerals is no more complex a problem than that which faces the commercial compounder. A linear programme can be used to devise both daily rations and percentage diets.

Evaluating livestock system environmental performance with whole-farm nutrient balance.

As a part of the USEPA's concentrated animal feeding operation (CAFO) final rule, all CAFOs are required to develop and implement a nutrient management plan (NMP). The USEPA's emphasis on better management of nutrients appropriately targets a critical environmental issue associated with animal production. The concentration of animals in livestock feeding operations, often separate from feed gra...

Low Cost Feeding Strategies for Dual Purpose Cattle in Venezuela

This simulation study was to evaluate low cost feeding strategies in response to higher cost of commercial concentrates to maintain current milk sales from dual purpose cattle herds in the humid lowlands of western Venezuela. Farm intensification and drivers of technology adoption in mixed dairy-crop systems in Santa Cruz, Bolivia

The expanding demand for livestock products in developing countries is expected to drive changes in livestock farming systems, such as intensification and technological development. However, while large commercial farms can take advantage of these new opportunities, semi-subsistence agriculture will be the main option for many poor livestock keepers. Development pathways may depend on local and...

Structural and productivity change in US agriculture , 1950 – 1982

This paper tests whether structural change in US agriculture is an important channel to TFP growth and evaluates the relative impact of (i) public research and education policies, (ii) private R&D and market forces, and (iii) government farm programs on structural change. We specify a structural econometric model, fit it to US state aggregate data, 1953–1982, and use the associated reduced-form...
